Ellen Hahn of Kentucky Center for Smoke-Free Policy Continues Misleading Campaign Against E-Cigs

Date Posted: August 8, 2012

In a recent interview with a local news station, Dr. Ellen Hahn of the Kentucky Center for Smoke-Free Policy made several claims regarding the “danger” of electronic cigarettes. She stated that there is no evidence to support an ecig’s viability as a smoking cessation tool; advising smokers instead to seek out medicinal and therapeutic solutions. She goes on to say that e-cigarettes contain many of the carcinogens found in tobacco smoke and even argues that they are as harmful as traditional cigarettes.

It’s difficult to say whether Dr. Hahn simply does not have all of the information or if she is purposefully ignoring available data. There are published studies which echo anecdotal testimony regarding electronic cigarettes’ benefits as a smoking cessation aid. Claiming that e-cigs pose no harm reduction for smokers because their ingredients are unknown is tantamount to saying a person is better off smoking tobacco cigarettes because we know what’s in them. Many of the dangerous carcinogens to which Dr. Hahn refers, like formaldehyde, exist only in trace amounts. These levels are so minimal, they fall way below what is currently accepted by the FDA for use in products like baby shampoo or naturally occurring in certain fruits and vegetables.

While Dr. Ellen Hahn is representing herself as a proponent of public health, she has ties to Big Pharma which would belie that claim. In fact, Dr. Hahn received an honorarium (and possibly funding) from a company with huge stakes in the smoking cessation game; namely, Pfizer. Makers of the popular quit smoking drug, Chantix, Pfizer’s ties to the anti-smoking campaign are numerous and far-reaching. It stands to reason that any device, like an electronic cigarette, with the potential to assist smokers in their quest to quit, poses a significant threat for a drug company like Pfizer.

This leads many industry experts to question Dr. Hahn’s true motivation. Taking into consideration her ties to Pfizer, it’s difficult to accept her allegations at face-value. Conflicts of interest like this one are rampant in public health arenas and remain one of the biggest obstacles faced by the e-cig industry. When will the tide turn? Only time will tell.

AS USUAL THE FDA ONLY STICKS ITS NOSE IN WHEN THEY STAND TO LOSE MONEY!!! THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT ANY OF US AND OUR HEALTH! WE DO THE BEST WE CAN TO BETTER OURSELVES WITH THE WORLD WE LIVE IN! ALL THEY DO IS TAKE AWAY OUR OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE A BETTER CHANGE, WHEN THE TRUTH IS WE’RE ALL SICK BECAUSE OF THEM!! THEY ARE THE ONES WHO ENDORSE THE DRUGS WE GET FROM OUR DOCTORS AND WE DIE BECAUSE OF THEM! THANKS A LOT FDA!

Eve though the cap lock feature was annoying in Audree’s post, because caps make it hard to read and take someone seriously-it is tantamount to standing on a street corner yelling regardless of whether your audience is willing to hear or not so it encroaches on personal space.
I agree 100% with her post-FDA is money motivated and it is in our hands to do what we can for ourselves. Dr’s hand us what the FDA Approves, in some cases we benifit by them but in the case of items smoking related I do not feel that is true for all. They are afraid e-cigs will reduce their profit.

This b*tch is an idiot. My doctor has told me that the wheezing in my lungs are now gone and I continue to substitute ecigs for real ones. I hate the ignorant people that are running this country into bankruptcy and I hate ignorant people that speak before knowing the facts. The fact is that I can breathe better, walk up stairs much easier, and do not cough and hack up sh*t every morning! Eff you Ellen Hahn and eff you too FDA!!!

  3. Matt says:

Electronic cigarettes helped me quit smoking immediately! As soon as I tried one I put down cigarettes forever! I feel better now and can breathe better now than I have in 23 years! KISS MY ASS BIG PHARMA and all the idiots out there trying to claim e-cigs are bad!

I am writing this post instead of contacting this woman directly and telling her to f off and die. I am one of those people who — seeking salvation from my 30 year 2+ pack a day habit — believed the hype about Chantix. And what did it get me (a happy and successful college professor)? A one week stay in a psych ward for trying to take my own life. Never before and never since have I even come close to being suicidal — but that evil drug — far worse than crack or heroin or meth in my opinion — did something to my brain I am still at a loss to explain. E-cigs are the miracle I’ve been seeking. And I am terrified some corporate shill or misguided bureaucrat will take them away.
