Who’s Who in the E Cigarette Industry
Date Posted: February 20, 2014
The electronic cigarette industry continues to grow at a rapid pace, with no signs of slowing down. Since e-cigs entered the American market in 2007, several influential individuals and organizations have emerged with the shared goal of educating both policymakers and consumers. Common objectives include achieving public acceptance and promoting responsible regulations (like age restrictions and quality control) for e-cigs.
As with most things that are new and unfamiliar, electronic cigarettes have just as many opponents as they do advocates. But for today, we’re not going to give the industry’s opponents more than a quick mention (which we just did). Now, let us continue…
Here are our two favorite e cigarette industry influencers:
Smoke Free Alternatives Trade Association – aka SFATA
SFATA serves as an educational tool and lobbying resource for policymakers, industry stakeholders and consumers. Visit their website to read about the latest news, studies, regulation updates and industry events. You can also visit their “Issues at a Glance” http://www.sfata.org/issues-at-a-glance/ page for an interactive map with the latest information about state regulations. There’s even a tool that finds your local representatives’ contact information so you can voice your own opinion to the right people.
The Rest of the Story: Tobacco News Analysis and Commentary – A Blog by Dr. Michael Siegel
Dr. Michael Siegel is not affiliated with any industry stakeholders; yet, he is still one of the industry’s most established advocates. Dr. Siegel’s articles are thorough and informative; they are focused on the politics and science behind e-cigs and tobacco. Each post on his blog has two parts: first, a factual summary of some opinionated news related to tobacco or e-cigs, and then “The Rest of the Story” in which he shares his own commentary, noting scientific facts and usually debunking the original arguments. Dr. Siegel has also been interviewed by several industry stakeholders and served on panels meant to educate policymakers and help promote public acceptance and responsible regulations. Part of his biography is below.
“Dr. Siegel is a Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences, Boston University School of Public Health. He has 25 years of experience in the field of tobacco control. He previously spent two years working at the Office on Smoking and Health at CDC, where he conducted research on secondhand smoke and cigarette advertising. He has published nearly 70 papers related to tobacco.”
You may have noticed that influencers from the tobacco industry have inserted themselves into the electronic cigarette industry. This doesn’t come as a surprise, since people naturally resist the unknown, and tobacco products are compared to e-cigs more than any other consumer product category. On the federal level, the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) acts as the official resource for consumers to find official regulatory updates on e-cigs. The FDA’s proposed e cigarette regulations are supposed to be released in the upcoming months…
Trusted experts in a well-known industry have enough credibility to educate consumers and stakeholders in a way that’s well-received, even if the products are fairly new to the market.
Hopefully you’ll find SFATA and Dr. Michael Siegel to be useful resources in your search for the facts. Keep reading the V2 Blog for more helpful tips and information about e-cigs and this exciting industry!
