E Cigarette Etiquette: Do’s & Don’ts

Date Posted: April 28, 2014

Are you a polite vaper or a public cloud chaser?

Hopefully, you’re the former and not the latter. Although ecigarettes continue to gain popularity in the eyes of the public, they’re not completely accepted yet. Because the vapor from an e cigarette resembles cigarette smoke, some people still perceive vaping as smoking. How can we change that?

etiquette niceIt’s a tough concept for many to accept, but in situations like this, perception is reality. As vapers, we owe it to ourselves to maintain a positive reputation as sophisticated, savvy consumers who live responsibly. The more public support the e cigarette industry can harness, the better the outcome will be for all of us. And it starts with having good manners…

When you’re anywhere that’s not your home or a place just for vapers, follow these do’s and don’ts to avoid bringing negative attention to yourself and the electronic cigarette industry as a whole.

e cigarette etiquette don'tsDon’t vape in front of children. E-cigarettiquette may be a mouthful, but that’s nothing compared to the mouthful you’ll get from a momma bear trying to keep her innocent kids… innocent. E-cigarettes are for adults.

Don’t proudly exhale a large, obtrusive cloud of vapor in public locations (even if vaping is permitted). This is called “cloud chasing” and it’s just obnoxious. If you’re a cloud chaser, do it at home or at organized events.

Don’t vape inside a restaurant. Unless you know the place is vapor friendly, take your ecig outside.

Don’t EVER exhale vapor in someone’s face (unless they give you permission)

Don’t vape in any theatre, whether it’s a live performance or a film. Exhaling clouds of vapor in a dark room with a projector or spotlights will annoy the crap out of everyone else. Plus, most e-cigarettes have tips that light up, potentially causing distractions for both performers and the rest of the audience. Wait for intermission or go to the back of the movie theatre for a quick puff.

Don’t be pretentious around current smokers – just because you’re a vaper now doesn’t mean you’re better. Educate but don’t be pushy.

thumbs upDo ask before you vape in public – if someone is close enough for you to poke them with a walking stick, ask if they mind you taking a puff.

Do ask before you vape inside a store, restaurant, bar, etc. If you’re met with hesitation, take the chance to educate. If the answer is no, don’t flip out; just go outside or take your business elsewhere.

Do exhale a moderate mist of vapor in public locations where vaping is permitted – anything more than that and you’ll prove to be a distracting, obnoxious human being.

Do practice “stealth vaping” when you’re in public. Show respect for others by NOT drawing attention to yourself and your e cigarette. Try a shorty battery from V2® to get your stealth on…

Do educate anyone who has questions about your ecig – send them to v2cigs.com or share your own, personal knowledge; just make sure you’ve got your facts straight.

Do share your personal story with curious folk – there’s so much value in being able to relate with someone else…

Do tell people about V2®!

Do enjoy your ecig when vaping is appropriate!

NOTE: Some vapers will disagree with a few of these “rules”, arguing that e-cigarettes are nothing like traditional cigarettes and we should be able to enjoy them when, where and how we want. But the reality is we can’t; at least not yet. Let’s work on establishing a good reputation, first. Do what you want with your e cigarette at home. But when you’re in the eyes of the public, keep it classy and respect others.

When you’re in public, remember: Don’t be a cloud chaser. Do be a sophisticated vaper.

    Some very valid points!
    I’d like to add:
Don’t vape on public transportation in rush hour.

Loved the etiquette rules. It’s exactly what I do already and I don’t want anyone to think I’m pretentious! Also thank-you for allowing me to respond without Facebook, Twitter, etc. as I am not into this type of social media.

Kim, I also do the same things that were written in the etiquette rules. It’s just common courtesy just as if you are smoking a real cigarette. Some people are just prone to histrionics when they perceive a cigarette. No sense in disturbing the public unless you can educate them.

Great information in this email. All the do’s and don’ts are really good points of information that really are helpful. I agree with everything don’ts and already do the do’s!
Keep up the great work that Ecigs are doing to help spread the correct info about Ecigs.

Great link to read savvy is the key being respectful is number 1 this was fantastic. As a V2 vape myself I love how you all respect others, seeing other companies show vape anywhere anyway you want is rude.

Great job V2 keep up the true value of the vape.

I agree completely with all the “suggestions”. I recently got through a three-day confinement for knee surgery in a non-smoking hospital, by hiding my V2 in my gown pocket and exhaling the vapor down the neck of the gown. A nurse noticed, started asking questions and, subsequently, became a former smoker by ordering her own V2. I thought that was a very good outcome for what might have been an unpleasant and awkward situation.

Pleasant, friendly education can work wonders if vapers would just keep the chip off their shoulders.

  8. Dave says:

These are all good suggestions and, though it may all seem like commonsense, you should always be respectful of other people’s space. Until such a time comes when vaping is no longer shackeled to the stigma of cigarette smoke, people will unfortunately probably still associate one with the other.
Also, on a side note: Always be aware of your surroundings and the people in them while vaping. “Stealthy” vaping may be courteous but it can still easily arouse suspicios in some (I’m thinking of law enforcement here) that what they think they see you doing may not be what you’re actually doing. Overly “stealthiness” is no substitution for mindfulness.
    Be safe and vape on.

  9. Lisa says:

Great suggestions and anyone who vapes would do well to follow them. It’s important to be mindful of others and to help educate any way we can since vaping is still, too often, associated with smoking. I think non-smokers in general aren’t necessarily aware of what an e-cig is. That being said, we should be respectful and use common sense.

Thanks, V2, for all you do in providing a wonderful product (and saving lives by helping individuals quit smoking!) AND being considerate and caring of how e-cigs are perceived. By offering these great suggestions, we can all help the public be more accepting of what an e-cig is.

  10. Dale says:

Why can’t you make the e-cig without the cloud of smoke? After all we’re just after the nicotine right? Don’t add the ingredient that produces smoke. No vapor (to be seen) no problem

  11. Gene Myers says:

The 2 keys to stealth vaping is to eliminate or seriously reduce the exhaled vaper cloud, and to not do your vaping as if it were a normal cigarette. Try this. Take a normal puff, exhale as usual, and see the cloud. Now, take another normal puff, but before exhaling, hold your breath for anout 5 seconds. Then SLOWLY exhale. Big difference. In stealth prudent environments, I hold the cig between my thumb and fore finger eith just enough of the tip visible to put my lips on. The body of the ecig is hidden within my palm. Try it.
